How DEMA Proved Tim’s Scuba Maps Was More Than Just an idea!

Every new business has that moment — the moment where you wonder if your idea is brilliant… or if you’re just overly caffeinated and optimistic. For me, that moment happened somewhere between cruising at 30,000 feet and stepping into the Orlando Convention Center for DEMA 2025, the largest scuba diving trade show in the U.S. (and honestly, probably the world).
Over 500 vendors, thousands of visitors, dive resorts from every corner of the planet — if there was ever a place to test whether Tim’s Scuba Maps had a future, this was it.
I didn’t have a booth.
I didn’t have a banner.
I didn’t even have a rolling suitcase full of samples like the seasoned exhibitors.
What I did have was a backpack full of waterproof maps… and a whole lot of determination.
Diving Into the Deep End Without a Booth
Walking into DEMA for the first time is like walking into a diver’s version of Disney World. Everywhere you look — dive resorts, liveaboards, gear companies, underwater photographers, conservation groups — all buzzing with energy and excitement.
I wasn’t there to browse.
I was there to hustle.
So, I went booth to booth, resort to resort, map in hand, introducing myself and showing them what I’d created. No script. No sales pitch. Just genuine enthusiasm and a product I believed in.
And the response?
Absolutely through the roof.
I’m talking resort managers grabbing the map, calling coworkers over, flipping it around, asking questions, and smiling like kids on Christmas morning. As you can see in the photos, the excitement was real — resort managers proudly holding the very first sample map in their hands.
I’d estimate 90% of the resorts loved the maps. Not “polite nod” loved — I mean:
- “We want these in our gift shop.”
- “Can you ship to our island?”
- “Do you have wholesale pricing?”
- “These are exactly what divers want.”
One resort even tried to place an order right there on the spot. I wasn’t even set up to take orders yet — that’s how early this was. But that moment told me everything I needed to know.
The Moment It Became Real
Somewhere between the 20th and 30th booth, it hit me:
This isn’t just a fun idea. This is a real business.
Dive resorts want these maps.
Divers want meaningful souvenirs.
Shops want something unique, waterproof, and beautiful.
And I have it.
DEMA didn’t just validate the idea — it lit the fuse.
